my spot

I'm not by any means a professional, but I'm making an attempt to have some fun and my idea of fun is making cakes and decorating them, or painting canvas. I found a great website that is full of ideas and now I've started to try to make stuff for my friends and family. This is my little corner of the internet to post some pics of what I've done so far and those sites full of ideas for future things to do

Star Wars -eeeek

I love all things Star Wars and when a friend asked me to make her hubby a Star Wars themed cake, I was sooooo excited. After looking around online for ideas, it was obvious that there were lots out of my league. So I decided to stick with simple.

Which meant a fondant covered blue cake with cut out white stars and the logo in white. Then figures of the characters out of fondant sitting around the tiers of the cake.

I didn't take a picture of the actual cake - sorta forgetful that way :-) - but I did get some awesome shots of the figures.

Update ** friend of mine sent me a pic of the finished cake :-)

Homemade with Love

Made these for friends of mine as a result of a Facebook challenge where we need to exchange a gift this year that is homemade. Took me almost 8 months to come up with the following, but I like the end results.

Fish!

At our workplace recently we had a week of activities for the employees that celebrated the Fish philosophy as part of our EAP week. We also had a potluck and our department brought the dessert. A awesome fish cake was made, along with fish cupcakes. Also present were squirrel and bird cupcakes (funny story there :-)) I made fish cake pops as my part of dessert.

Forgot to take a picture of the bunch I made, and these 2 little guys were all were left for my kids.

I had a heck of a time with the orange - for some reason the first batch refused to melt. So strange. The second batch had what must of been a drop of water or steam from the stove and it solidified immediately. Third batch finally worked.

Retirement Desk

A good friend of mine recently retired and I knew immediately that I wanted to make her a cake that represented her desk. The desktop itself didn't work out exactly like I wanted - some of the gelatin didn't take, but overall I'm really happy with it. She still has yet to tell me how it tasted though!

Happy Somewhere over the Rainbow

A friend of mine turned 40 this weekend and is in love with all things Wizard of Oz. She asked for a theme cake for her birthday and this is the result - It actually tasted pretty good :-)

Firefighter

A friend of mine has a son that's a firefighter and asked if I would make him a firefighter themed cake. Originally she wanted a cake in the shape of a firetruck, but when I googled them, they were either incredibly detailed or very childish looking. We found one with the fire hydrant and hose and I added the boots and his helmet. Need the logo for the front of the helmet but otherwise all done! I noticed in the photo the cracking in the icing under the weight of the hydrant - quickly added more grass growing down the side of the cake. Fingers crossed it makes it until morning for the delivery!!

Pretty in Pink

Princess cake for a friend of mine - her little girl is turning 6 and my youngest (also 6) was thoroughly disgusted with this cake - all pink and stuff.

little orange

Made a cake for a co-worker for a Christening. I found a swirl cake that I was wanting to do and when she saw the pic she loved it. She wanted a little bit of orange incorporated into the cake.

It's creamcheese and chocolate cake marble. Little on the heavy side but the fluffy creamcheese icing should offset that.

blank spot

There's a blank spot at work where a picture needs to be. I've been trying to think of something to go there and while going through the internet I was inspired by a picture of birch trees.

I almost ran out of white paint, but I kind of like the rough effect of the paintings not being perfect.

creative craving satisfied

Had one of those days today when I desperately needed a creative outlet. It was either reupholster a piece of furniture, find a wall to paint, rearrange furniture, or paint an empty canvas picked up yesterday. The rearranging and canvas won :-)

still obsessed with Wall-e

My youngest claims to be Wall-e's number one fan and has the utmost respect for him (his actual words) so when his 6th birthday was arriving, he knew exactly what he wanted for a cake. Considering that I've forgotten his birthday before and he only wanted cupcakes last year, I agreed a Wall-e cake would be done.

I did feel a little rushed with this guy and the fondant was really soft - but since he's my first fully detailed cake - I'm pleased with the end result. He didn't turn out too bad :-)

EEEEK

I forgot to post one very important pic - my Valentine's Day gift :-)

I love my husband!!!

I'm Irish - NOT

St. Patty's day came to work with a fundraiser again. This time with a green theme. I wanted to make cake pops for this fundraiser as well, but unfortunately I ran out of time, so at the last minute I whipped up some green cupcakes with icing and fondant decorations on them.

The icing turned out really glossy looking, but wasn't that soft.

Valentine's Day

I made these Teddy Bear Cake pops for a fundraiser at work. Got the idea from Bakerella. I couldn't find all of the items that she had, so I tweaked it a bit. I like them, they really turned out well :-) I hope the Valentines that get them enjoy them too.

Cougar in Training

A friend of mine asked me to make cake pops for a friend's "over the hill" birthday with a cougar in mind. I googled Cougar and cake images and after I filtered all the X-rated content, there really was nothing out there! I tried a couple ideas and after nothing was working and one of the cake pops was eaten out of frustration and anger, I decided to go with more of a cartoon image and joke idea.
